Up Close with Patricia Urquiola

Patricia Urquiola's professional career began in Italy, influenced by figures such as Bruno Munari, the intellectual founding father of the Milan school. Patricia considers herself a Spaniard, or rather an Asturian of Basque descent. Urquiola trained at the Polytechnic Universities of Madrid and Milan. In Milan she worked with Vico Magistretti and Achille Castiglioni before opening her own studio there in 2001.
Patricia's new series, Tierras, is comprised of colored-body porcelain tile and three-dimensional, extruded natural terracotta. The Tierras collection is inspired by the concept of sedimentation and traditional Mediterranean craftsmanship.
“I needed a real tactile material, which did not pretend to be anything else. I was looking for a warm element, both visually and to the touch. It should remind of something familiar, terracotta and lava, and which is at the same time something different. A return to the base, a homecoming, but a new base, a new home.” - Patricia Urquiola
