About Chair Rails
Chair rails are decorative details that are installed along the walls of a house, particularly in dining rooms, kitchens, and other areas where chairs are usually placed. These horizontal strips of molding serve both a decorative and practical function. Not only do they serve as beautiful accents for a room, they also protect walls from scuffs and dents caused by the backs of chairs and other pieces of furniture.
Installing Chair Rails
- Height - Chair rails don’t need to be installed at a specific height. It is practical, however, to measure them up to the height of the chairs in your home. If there is no frame of reference, the rule of thumb is to use a third of the total height of the wall as the basis for installation.
- Type - Chair railing comes in an assortment of shapes and styles. They can be made of wood, polyurethane, or stone and designed with simple to elaborate details. Those who prefer stone detailing, for example, may choose either a marble or a travertine chair rail. Both provide ample protection from furniture pieces while adding visual appeal to a room.
- Color - It is important to choose a color that works best with your wallpaper or paint. Stone chair rails, such as a polished marble chair rail, have a natural distinctive color that instantly adds flair to a room.
