TRENDS IN TILE – A Question and Answer Session
How have tile trends changed in the last ten years? Are certain looks and/or colors more popular today?
While Natural Stone is and will always be a popular material, imaging and printing technology has allowed manufacturers of porcelain tiles, particularly in Italy, to create amazingly accurate reproductions of natural stone and wood looks which once installed are virtually maintenance free.
GRAY IS THE NEW NEUTRAL! Grays and charcoals in warm tones are extremely popular. These colors have become staples in the home furnishings market and this is now reflected in the direction clients wish to see in their tile selections. Materials like Lagos Azul Limestone or Calacatta Gold Marble (in both natural material and porcelain) work well with this updated palette.
What are popular sizes and materials for wall tiles today?
Subway tile has become a “go to” material for kitchen backsplashes and shower/tub walls. Sleek and contemporary, glazed and crackled or with a hand-crafted look in a myriad of colors, there is a tile to meet any design scheme. While the rectangular 3×6 size is the most popular, sleeker longer sizes like 4×10 or 6×18 are emerging on the market. No longer simply flat, these tiles are available with wave designs which give them a great deal of dimension.
Should clients express their own taste when selecting tile or select materials that will be timeless and “sellable”?
Tile installation is definitely a more “permanent” selection in the home. It is not easily or inexpensively changed like wall paint. Customers definitely want to imprint their own style in their home but still make selections that are “timeless and sellable”, however tastes change. Bianco Carrara marble which is currently a popular tile for kitchens and bathrooms has been used in homes for over 2000 years. It comes in and out of vogue. Popular in the 20’s and again in the 50’s, homeowners couldn’t rip it out fast enough in the late sixties and seventies to replace it with a “newer” more up-to-date color scheme of harvest gold and pea-green.
What questions should a homeowner ask themselves about their own taste, lifestyle, etc., in order to make correct decisions when selecting tile?
Customers definitely need to evaluate their lifestyle before making tile decisions. Is their home casual or formal? Are there children in the home? What level of maintenance do they expect from their tile. Natural stones require a little more upkeep while porcelain tiles are virtually worry-free.
Kitchen and bath magazines are a great place to go for customers unfamiliar with the latest trends. It also allows customers to see completed looks with cabinetry, countertops, tile work which helps them visualize how their space might look once completed.
