Design Faux Pas or Fall is in the Raw?

Posted under Home decor, Interior Design by on September 25, 2011

The edginess of Fall this year is raw with use of bold, poignant materials.  I do not know if I could live with the unfinished look of plywood for my dining room.  Not to mention the splinters.  I see the need for contradiction in this space with the dramatic crystal chandelier, and the most forgotten flower, the Carnation.  While the red makes a statement, the tufted leather office chairs look misplaced.  Like Couture Fashion, some designs are meant to be looked at, not lived in.  You be the judge.

Sometimes being bold means adding the pop of red with a tray, a practical hard surface for ottomans instead of coffee tables.  Perfect for serving drinks, and sometimes we can only be as raw as a vase of flowers.  No splinters, and they make me smile.

If I Had Three Million Dollars

Posted under Home decor, Inspiration, Neighborhoods by on August 12, 2011

I would buy this house.  Alright so I’ll probably need more than just three mill but you get my drift. I used to drive by this house all the time, wondering what it looks like on the inside, if it was as cool as I imagined.

Turns out, it is.

Oh to have this kitchen. The circular island/bar with what looks like a range – talk about a dream come true.

Fabulous furniture/decor. Whoever decorated this home did a wonderful job.

The floor to ceiling windows, the exterior access to the 2nd storey, the pool… excuse me while I go purchase some lottery tickets!

Testing: Houzz App for iPad

Posted under For Fun, Home decor, Inspiration by on June 13, 2011

“At your fingertips” has never been more literal or true than with the iPad. From magazines to movies, the iPad has tons of apps for almost every, well, application. Since I’m constantly on the lookout for more home decor inspiration and instruction, I’ve been searching for some fun, functional design apps. Naturally, I go for the free apps first and foremost and stumbled upon the design app by houzz (houzz.com).

The app features articles and profiles on professionals in the design industry, separated by tabs to the left of the screen: Photos, Ideabooks, Profressionals and My Houzz.

The Ideabooks tab is good for information. This is where Houzz’s contributors provide articles and advice on topics ranging from “how to pick the right pattern for your home” to pictures of rooms decorated with a certain color or theme and more.

Found this article on using weave stone tile.

The Photos tab is even cooler – you can pick what you want to see based on category (bathroom, exterior, kids, porch and so on). To take it one step further into sorting things for you, the photo tab also lets you pick by Metro Area so if I wanted to see what people in Nashville are doing with their kitchens, I can. When you pull up the picture it tells you which architect designed it, some with a more detailed description of the renovation or design.

If there’s a certain picture you like, simply tap on “Add to Ideabook” and it’s there, bookmarked in your My Houzz tab. You’re able to create a mood board or inspiration board of your own based on what you see and it’s easily accessible when you’re hit with that “Oh I saw this picture and thought this would be a great idea for my bathroom remodeling” moment. It’s like a magazine clipping without the mess. I think I’m going to be using this app quite a bit!

Visit the iTunes App Store or the App Store on your iPad for the free Houzz app. and get to being inspired!

A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That

Posted under Home decor, Inspiration by on June 1, 2011

Be Fashion Forward and use your creative design genius by integrating a little bit of this, and a little bit of that.  Eclectic design incorporates different pieces from various eras and design concepts.

I love this eclectic space designed by Francis Dzikowski and Plastolux!  The white backdrop allows for pops of color and influential pieces.  The Neoclassic architectural elements compliment the white tufted sofa with Modern touches.

Get this eclectic look by adding complimentary and playful accent colors.  This vintage Fuchsia Bamboo Mirror adds a bold splash of Chinoiserie inspiration, and this contemporary white Stag Head will definitely be an ice breaker.

The lime and Kelly green shades look fabulous in velvet, like this 18th Century inspired Fainting Sofa, and add Metallic Throw Pillows for a little subtle glitz!

Mustard yellow looks stellar with these green and fuchsia shades, and you can create focal points with brocade wallpaper framed by intricate moldings.

Creating an eclectic space like this takes a little design research, and be sure to keep your eyes open to unique possibilities.  Once you start a collection of favorite items and styles, you will be able to mix and match like a pro!
