I live for summer! –sunshine and travel, a casual undertone… there’s something very free that comes with chasing waves and kicking sand around in your shoes — the whole thing makes me smile. I especially love the ‘tapping into the other side of myself’ part of the deal.
I think summer is a great metaphor for ideal design–a lighten up and let your hair down attitude… the push to have a little fun, or to create an experience… memories.
As we cruise into August, how is your summer teasing your design-mind? How can we help? Breeze through some of our recent projects (below) and keep me in mind for anyone you know who may be in need of a push in the interiors department…

BOSTON RESIDENCE
One of my ‘grinning’ moments over the course of this project was when my client looked at me and said– “Basically, if the house  is chocolate brown or white all over, then I’ll be happy. Nothing else please.” Amazingly, when you add tonality, balance and texture to even a small range of color… the result can be inspiring! The dining chairs (above) and zebra stair runners (right) are two great examples of how one can create a bold and elegant space without showing off in a loud or overly colorful way…

Speaking of “bold and elegant” – a ‘grinning’ moment during this UES revamp was when my clients actually said yes to painting the entire ceiling in their double-height dining space turquoise! Check out the before and after shots through the B&B link in the right column.
This client’s goal was to create something that feels more  contemporary and fresh, and the result is a great example of how you can completely transform a space with only a fresh coat of paint and rethinking the furniture. To be fair, we did refinish the floors which juxtapose nicely against the existing millwork and overall architecture in the space.

This table is SUCH a find for the price! The scale is fantastic and materials show off as adamantly more refined and expensive than actual – I recently used this piece in a NYC living room, and the client is thrilled all around – get yourself one if it works! So easy…

We’re dabbling in clean, fresh palates with vibrant pops. We’re not afraid of chatreause and mixing patterns. We’re focused on easy, natural fabrics. Texture is always top-of-mind. We still love greys, grey-browns, and mixing metals.
“Fresh” is a big word at DMc Interiors lately. Mid-Century shapes continue to
persuade our designs.

Nate Berkus’ Love Affair with Beveled Arabesque

Nate Berkus’ Love Affair with Beveled Arabesque

We all know Oprah’s favorite cutie patootie, Nate Berkus.  Well, apparently Nate Berkus knows us at MS+T.  Featured on the Nate Berkus website, our Beveled Arabesque is not only is a crowd pleaser, it is gorgeous in it’s own right.

Whether you are going for a contemporary look, or a vintage look with a twist you should consider our Beveled Arabesque which comes in a variety of dazzling colors.  You can incorporate your Arabesque with Carrara countertops, create a feature wall in an entryway, or take your bathroom on a journey to Morocco.  The possibilities are endless, and which ever color or application you decide, if it’s “good” with Nate, it’s “good” with me.

Surf’s Up!

Posted under Designers We Love, Fab Pads by on May 24, 2011

Pack your tooth brush and polka dot bikini and get whisked away to this dreamy beach house designed by J. Scott Hall Interiors.  The light and airy feel of this incredible beach pad will have you relaxed the instant you step foot in the door.

The velvety vanilla tones and mix of textures in this living room makes me melt!  The combination of shapes between the sofas and chaise lounge chair compliment each other by incorporating cream upholstery.  The addition of the unique accessories and artworks bring this room to life.

Squeal-Worthy Kitchen and Bathroom Alert!

Posted under Designers We Love by on April 18, 2011

You’ve got to take a minute and check out a recent renovation completed by Rachel Halvorson!  Read the full article here:

Just got back from a whirlwind trip to Scotts Antiques in Atlanta then directly to Montgomery, Alabama to check on one of my babies projects. Remember my whimsical/elegant client? Although all of the rooms are still under construction, I had to share some progress pics.

Update: the marble is in, and the tile is up. I squealed when I saw it!

It. is. stunning.

From “Blah.” to “Spa!”

Rebirth of a Residential Bath

From “Blah.” to “Spa!” with a Tile Transformation

mg 7996 From Blah. to Spa!

Helen Moore’s bathroom is a spa-like retreat awash in a fresh, natural canvas of beautiful tile.  From the soft, artful blend of the floor’s border patterns that gently envelope generously proportioned field tile to the textural touches that artfully climb the shower walls, this private retreat is a showcase of tile’s trans-formative powers.

mg 7962 300x199 From Blah. to Spa!To see this inspired space now, it’s hard to imagine it wasn’t always so light and bright. Before its tile transformation, this bathroom had limestone floors that needed updating , and the overall look was nice enough—though nothing stand-out.

Of course, that  floor sparked the need for a floor-to-ceiling, intensive redesign of the space. The homeowner entrusted the project to Nashville Interior Designer Landy Gardner, making a outdated bathroom an opportunity to create her dream bathroom.

Mission Stone & Tile was Landy’s first stop when it came to reinventing the space. In the Mission showroom, Landy and the homeowner surveyed a treasure trove of imaginative tiles until a particular border pattern caught their eyes. The chosen border is an ordered mosaic of oval shapes blending an earthly yet ethereal color palette that ultimately inspired the bath’s entire redesign.

With the unique border and large format field tile as the foundation, Landy invented a sophisticated, breathable bathroom that uses tile’s style to the utmost advantage. The interplay of shapes, textures, sizes and tonal colors keeps things interesting while achieving spatial harmony.  The large tiles are balanced by unique details to make the room open and cozy all at once.

Pottery Barn Syndrome

Posted under Bathrooms, Designers We Love by on January 24, 2011

If you want to remodel your bathroom, and you are stuck on ideas that resemble a Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware catalog, break away from the “Pottery Barn Syndrome” and look to a local Interior Designer.  Kelley Jones, a local Interior Designer, can inspire you to look at your bathroom with new eyes.

This particular bathroom she designed is reminiscent of Ancient Greece with the wall mosaics and shell mirrors.  Mixed with old Hollywood glamour, you would feel like a movie star getting dolled up in front of a mirrored vanity.

kj1 Pottery Barn Syndrome

Add interest to your shower walls with a unique mosaic tile pattern.

At first glance, one may not consider pairing black lacquered furniture and barely pink walls with the colorful wall mosaic tiles.  The pink undertones in the tile compliment the walls, and the mix of black lacquer and mirrored furniture creates an eclectic bathroom setting.

kj2 Pottery Barn Syndrome

Glamour meets Greece.

I love nothing more than combining vintage pieces with newer, contemporary pieces.  If not carefully selected, your space could turn into a disastrous mess.  Encourage complimenting items, such as similar shapes, scales, and colors.  This particular bathroom is a wonderful representation of creating a unique space that you cannot find in a catalog.
