What Makes Tile Subway Tile?

Posted under Budget Friendly Tile Options by on July 27, 2011

Obviously, “subway tile” is the kind of tile you’ll find in subway stations, particularly the ones in New York City. A brief history of the tile: Heins & LaFarge, an architecture firm in New York City was part of the Arts and Crafts movement back in the early 1900′s. They were the architects who oversaw the design of subway stations and knew that ceramics were the only material that could withstand heavy-duty cleaning plus the wear and tear so they worked with ceramic producing companies Grueby Faience Company of Boston and Rookwood Pottery of Cincinnati. Whether you adopt their mosaic designs or you stick with plain white subway tile, subway tile comes in an array of colors and sizes to be used as your backsplash, in your bathroom or anywhere your creative heart desires. You can rest easy knowing that scrubbing the grease off your subway tiled backsplash will be a cinch. It’s a cost effective way to update your home.
